In the project CannaReWool, researchers at the HS Niederrhein, together with developers at Brain of Materials, have developed circular yarn blends of hemp and wool over the past 1.5 years and will now present them to the experts of the furniture industry, home textile industry, and automotive industry.
Brain of Materials AG, Dusseldorf /Germany, has developed from a start-up into a specialist for the digitalization of supply chains and the circular economy. Together with the Department of Textile and Clothing Technology at the Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences (HS Niederrhein), Mönchengladbach/Germany, the company will present its latest development. This was made possible by funding from EFRE funds through the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Climate Protection, and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany.
Especially within the cooperation with the HS Niederrhein, Brain of Materials is working on developing recyclable, knittable yarns in a novel combination of German locally grown hemp fibers and pure recycled wool.
The following example calculation illustrates the benefit of using a hemp-wool blend (50% / 50%) for reuse: a desk chair with a seat, backrest, and armrest requires approx. 2 m² of cushion fabric. With a weight of 500 g/m², 1 kg of material is needed. Producing 1,000 chairs would absorb about 1.3 tons of CO2 during the hemp cultivation process and require a cultivation area of 0.125 hectares. By comparison, if cotton was used, 0.5 hectares would be required. Additionally, the fiber yield of hemp is about twice as high as that of cotton. Therefore, the cultivation and use of locally grown textile hemp fibers contribute improving Germany's climate goals and the program area directly through cultivation and indirectly by eliminating long transportation distances of imported fibers.
After the successful technical project results presented at the Interzum, Brain of Materials is now working to bring the yarn into small-scale production together with knitting and weaving manufacturers and to develop local supply relationships and recycling routes using Brain of Materials' digital platform. The Interzum 2023 from May 9-12, 2023, in Cologne/Germany, is the trade fair for the worldwide furniture supplier industry and interior design industry to meet, stay informed about current trends and discuss the future of the industry.
