Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is a natural, renewable and sustainable biomaterial derived from well-managed, certified forests. It provides a low carbon additive to enhance performance-driven advanced materials and specialty chemicals.
The company Performance Biofilaments is (according to the company) starting the world's largest NFC commercial production plant at Resolute's Forest Products, Kénogami paper mill in Quebec/Canada. A daily production capacity of 21 tons is now available to supply customers for commercial orders in concrete and mortar, nonwovens, industrial fluid, biocomposite (bico) plastics, thin films and mineral consolidation applications. A small dose of this nano-scale biomaterial has a significant impact, therefore, capacity of 7,000 tons/year will go a long way.
Performance BioFilaments Inc., Vancouver/Canada, is a joint venture (JV) between Mercer International Inc., Vancouver/Canada, and Resolute Forest Products Inc., Montreal/Canada. Commercial applications for NFC, which can be used to enhance the performance characteristics of a wide variety of products, are being developed. Derived from wood fiber – a renewable and natural resource – NFC optimizes the strength, stability, flexibility and longevity of a variety of materials, including composites, coatings, packaging, filter and nonwovens.
